Dubai 2011: R-R 'Workhorse' with plenty of life left in it…

The Rolls-Royce Trent 700 that powers Airbus's A330 wide-body airliner has become the 'workhorse of the Middle East' according to the engine's programme director Rosie Toogood, speaking to Show Business.

The Derby, UK, company has just delivered its 1,000th Trent 700 – this time to Cathay Pacific Airways, the first and largest operator of the A330.

Said Toogood: “We now have more than 400 R-R Trent 700-powered A330s in service worldwide and the fleet has racked-up more than 17 million reliable, economical and environmentally friendly hours with 48 operators.

“Average daily flying hours work out at 10.3 and the total fleet hours equate to more than 10,000 trips to the moon… and back. What’s more, each tiny blade in the high pressure turbine generates 800hp (0.6MW), about the same as each Formula 1 car that raced around the Yas Marina circuit at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Sunday.”
