Through the competition the ESNC seeks to uncover satellite navigation that uses technology in innovative ways.

One aspect of the competition is the Arab Science and Technology Foundation (ASTF), which is a regional partner, running and supporting the Arab MENA regional challenge within the competition.

“Now in its second year with the ESNC, the partnership has further enhanced the region’s credibility as a viable innovative technology user and developer,” said Nick Webb, director, Streamline Marketing Group, organisers of GSSF 2011.

To help regional entrants better understand the ESNC, it is holding its international kick-off meeting during the final day of GSSF, on 11 May 2011. This will allow competitors to learn more about the principles of Global Navigation and Satellite Systems (GNSS) and how its services can be applied in supporting various aspects of growth within the MENA region.

It will include discussion of some examples of GNSS applications which can be explored and utilised in benefiting the MENA region. The meeting represents an excellent opportunity to meet the network of international satellite navigation innovators, to establish new contacts, meet new partners and learn about trends within GNSS.

“Over the last decade, GNSS has become ingrained in every aspect of our daily lives, while also being intrinsic to peacekeeping, defense and security monitoring,” said Webb.

These services include GPS systems for navigation on land, at sea and in the air, across aircraft and spacecraft. GNSS services are also a key part of geo-spatial information systems used in mapping and planning services.

“Many of the ideas submitted in previous years have been successfully launched into the market. A key part of the competition’s success is close collaboration with regional, institutional, and industrial partners with whom it shares a common goal of promoting international innovation and fosters the entrepreneurial spirit,” added Webb.
