Pilot ejects in Afghanistan Harrier accident

A UK harrier jump jet crashed at Kandahdar Airfield on May 14 but the pilot successfully ejected having avoided another aircraft on the runway while making an emergency landing.

The British Ministry of Defence is investigating the an accident involving a BAE Systems Harrier GR9A.

The aircraft's pilot sustained minor injuries in the incident, which according to the British military occurred during an emergency landing at the coalition base. A full assessment of the damaged Harrier has yet to be completed, but sources in Afghanistan say there is no indication of any enemy action.

According to the UK’s Flight International, Britain’s GR7/9 force has a commitment in Afghanistan for five years Drawn from the combined Royal Air Force and Royal Navy Joint Force Harrier (JFH) organisation,. The aircraft are used to support the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force, providing vital close air support for ground personnel from Kandahar.
