Innovation to save weight at Aircraft Interiors show

“Airlines stress weight savings in the products they are buying,” said Vern Alg, veteran aircraft interiors specialist. “Airlines want to do their part for the environment by becoming ‘greener’ in their operations. Less weight means less fuel and a cleaner environment. Manufacturers are also making their products stronger and safer while making them lighter.”
From lightweight galley equipment and TV monitors to streamline chairs and greener processes, exhibitors are stressing greater innovation.
Carpet manufacturer InterfaceFLOR
is showing carpet squares that are being marketed to airlines and aircraft manufacturers as an alternative to the traditional broadloom rolled carpet. Adapted from the successful office, retail and home markets, the colourful carpet squares are positioned as a modular product that is easy to install, maintain and completely recyclable.
Seatbelt manufacturer AmSafe
is showing two innovative designs at the show. By trimming excess metal and fabric of the traditional product, their new lightweight belt assembly is nearly 25% lighter and can help save up to 50 pounds in the cabin of a wide-body aircraft. Also, their innovative seatbelt airbag system is gaining popularity with carriers who are starting to adapt the new technology.
In addition to the exhibitors stressing weight reduction, at least one company has been busy creating a product that affects the way passengers feel before, during and after the flight.
Kydex
is demonstrating their new thermoplastic sheet manufacturing process which aids travelers in creating a mood enhancing flight experience. Available in a myriad of colors and textures, custom designed panels--in combination with LED lighting--are utilized in the cabin to help enhance the ambience. With this system on-board, airlines can create a different atmosphere for any portion of the trip including boarding, take-off, in-flight and post-flight taxiing.
