UAE Space Agency joins International Space Education Board

The UAE’s representation on the ISEB will provide the first regional input to the group’s objectives of increasing literacy in space and related STEM fields, as well as supporting the development of advanced skills that will be required by future space programmes.

Areas of UAE Space Agency collaboration include proactive support for ISEB activities, exchange programs and cooperation with other organisations and institutions interested in space.

Dr Mohammed Al Ahbabi said: “Our new status as a member of the International Space Education Board represents the UAE Space Agency’s deeply-held priorities of student engagement, youth outreach and capacity development. These are among the most important areas of activity for both established and emerging space sectors alike. We look forward to close collaboration with our counterparts around the world to develop new programs and projects that will advance global opportunities for the leaders of tomorrow’s space sector.”

The UAE Space Agency gained membership of the ISEB following a unanimous vote by the organisation’s founding members that took place towards the end of the 69th International Astronautical Congress (IAC) in Bremen, Germany. The ISEB was established in 2005 by the education offices of the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), the European Space Agency (ESA), the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

In addition, towards the end of the IAC, the UAE Space Agency’s Director General H.E. Dr Mohammed Al Ahbabi was named Vice President of the International Astronautical Federation (IAF), the world’s leading space advocacy body, which organizes the annual Congress. Founded in 1951, the IAF is a non-governmental organisation that aims to advance scientific exchange and cooperation in all areas related to the exploration and peaceful utilisation of outer space.

Dr Al Ahbabi said: “This is a significant occasion for the UAE Space Agency, and one that reflects our deep commitment to working with all those interested in promoting and advancing space exploration for the benefit of humankind. With more and more nations looking to space for its positive socio-economic impact and technological developments, this position within the IAF will allow us to share our experiences in developing capabilities for space research, exploration and utilisation.”
