Blue Ray brings global viewing for airbourne DVDs

Flight Display Systems has unveiled the first Blu-ray disc player specifically designed for global aircraft operations. This product is available for a list price of US$4,879. A live demonstration was performed to business jet operators at the company's booth at the European business show EBACE last week and featured a 17-inch High-Definition LCD monitor.

“Blu-ray is the future for watching movies," said David Gray, President of Flight Display Systems. "This product is another example of our industry-leading innovation and commitment to in-flight entertainment."

DVDs are typically encoded with a region code that restricts the area in the world in which they can be played. But due to the global nature of aviation, Flight Display Systems has developed a Blu-ray and DVD player which can “switch” regions based on the aircraft’s operational mission. This is the first time that a Blu-ray disc player has been offered to the Middle East aviation market.

Customers can upgrade their aircraft with an HD Blu-ray player as a simple replacement unit, even if they do not elect to install HD displays. Because the FD932DVD-BLU includes both HDMI and composite (NTSC) output, it is backwards-compatible with older LCD and plasma monitors. Playback of traditional DVDs is also supported.

The FD932DVD-BLU is easy to install and operate. It includes a fully functional wireless IR remote, as well as an RS485 port for interface to other cabin management systems. This product includes a 2-year warranty.
