Wilson issued a video address saying: ‘This is a difficult day for all of us at Air India.’

He said that the airline’s efforts ‘are focussed entirely on the needs of our passengers, crew members, their families and loved ones.’

“I know that there are many questions, and at this stage, I will not be able to answer all of them,” he said.

Wilson confirmed that there were 230 passengers on board the flight and confirmed the nationalities of the travellers in line with Air India information issued.

Wilson further added that a special team of Air India ‘caregivers’ are supporting families, friends and crew members. He added that ‘Air India’s teams are working around the clock.’

Boeing President and CEO Kelly Ortberg also added: “Our deepest condolences go out to the loved ones of the passengers and crew on board Air India Flight 171, as well as everyone affected in Ahmedabad. I have spoken with Air India Chairman N. Chandrasekaran to offer our full support, and a Boeing team stands ready to support the investigation led by India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau.”

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also visited the scene of the crash and met with the injured in hospital.
