SIAEC and Gulf Technics say they will work towards a definitive agreement to establish the facility, "The establishment of a maintenance base in Bahrain will serve the needs of airlines in the Middle East to avail of high quality engineering services. The base will also be a springboard to the MRO markets in North Africa and Europe," says SIA Engineering's senior vice president commercial, Jack Koh Swee Lim.

The two companies signed the memorandum of understanding at the Bahrain International Airshow.

Gulf Technics is wholly owned by Mumtalakat and is an integral part of the Bahrain investment in the aerospace sector. "This new maintenance facility adds another crucial component to the services on offer and will be vital in helping to attract new airlines to use Bahrain International Airport," said Mumtalakat's CEO Talal Al-Zain at the signing ceremony.

SIAEC already has a major MRO presence in Bahrain as it was contracted by Gulf Air to supply MRO services at the airline’s home base at Bahrain International Airport.

The Singapore company had committed to work towards greater Bahrainisation when it won the contract in March last year. The new MRO project will be established by 2012.
