Grumman 21T crashes at Al Ain International Airport, UAE, causing four fatalities

The General Civil Aviation Authority of United Arab Emirates (GCAA) today confirmed that a Grumman 21T (Grumman Goose amphibian) aircraft crashed yesterday evening (27 February 2011) in Al Ain Airport.

The private plane was departing from Al Ain International airport, headed for Riyadh in Saudi Arabia.

Shortly after takeoff the aircraft veered to the left and crashed on taxiway kilo. The airport fire and rescue services responded immediately and the accident site was secured by the Al Ain Police.

The aircraft was destroyed by the impact and subsequent fire and the GCAA states that there were four fatalities as a result of the crash.

The investigation into this accident is led by a GCAA Air Accident Investigation team, which was dispatched to the area without delay.

The Grumman Goose is a vintage aircraft whose design dates from the late 1930s, although production of a modernised version of the type - known as the G-21G Super Goose - has been undertaken by US-based Antilles Seaplanes and it understood talks have been underweay with a Dubai-based company about marketing a type of G-21 in the UAE.
