Jordan and EU agree aviation pact

Jordan and the European Union have finally reached an agreement to create an open aviation area between the two sides.

The agreement, which will be formally signed in June,  is similar to that signed with Morocco in 2006.

"It will open up the respective markets, strengthen co-operation and offer new opportunities for consumers and operators," says a European Commission statement. The agreement enables airlines of either side to provide flights without restrictions on fares and capacity.

European transport commissioner Siim Kallas adds: "We expect new routes to be created and newcomers to enter the market, allowing better and cheaper flights for the citizens on both sides."
