It has also awarded Swedish company Megadoor a contract to supply and install the hangar doors.

The new complex will feature 6,400sqm of buildings sitting on a plot of 25,000sqm at the north-west end of the airport. The complex will provide comprehensive maintenance and support services to private and corporate aircraft.

CEO Ralph Eisenschmid said the company had been working on the project for three years and it was pleased it was coming to fruition.

“The complex should open in March,” said Ralph. “We’re not just putting up hangar space either, but are working on taxiways, security and the infrastructure for the whole site, including office and workshop areas.”

The project had been delayed until the airport decommissions its current radar system, which would otherwise suffer from interference from the building. A new upgraded radar system has now been installed in another area so construction can commence.
“We’ll be at full capacity quite quickly, as there has been a lot of interest in the project,” Eisenschmid said.

“Hopefully, we can construct further hangar space on the site at a later date. We hope that the project will continue the momentum that Bahrain Airport Company and the Bahrain Civil Aviation Affairs have started towards making Bahrain a regional aviation hub.”
Hafeera’s contract is to carry out all civil works for the project, while Megadoor will install two hangar doors, each 45m wide and 15.5m high. The value of the combined contract is in the range of BD 3 million.

Hafeera Contracting’s executive chairman, Isa Mohammed Abdul Rahim, said: “We are looking forward to working with MENA Aerospace and its team on this project as it is the first if its kind for the airport and the first in Bahrain.

“Working on airport projects is always more challenging due to operational, security and regulatory requirements. However, with good co-ordination and co-operation amongst all the stakeholders, we are certain that we will complete this project on time, on budget and with the quality of workmanship Hafeera is known for.”

Derek Salmons, area sales manager, for Megadoor in the Middle East region said: “We are very proud to be associated with this project, especially because MENA Aerospace is aiming to be one of the first aerospace companies in the Middle East to have a leadership in energy and environmental design (LEED)-compliant MRO and hangar facility – a requirement for which our doors are ideally suited.
