Egypt to invest $1.1bn in airport expansions

The country will spend $355m reconstructing Terminal 2 at Cairo International Airport, and will invest $760m on three new airports in the country.
“With a combined passenger traffic handling capacity of 10 million these new airports are Burg El Arab Airport, Hurgada Airport and Asyout Airport,” said Ihsan Sadik of Cairo Airport Company.
Burg El Arab will be ready in one year, while others will take two to three years before they start operations, he added.
“Egypt is launching a new cargo city project [at Cairo] this year so we are anticipating a new runway, air traffic control tower and people mover, among other big-ticket components,” said Sadik. The Automated People Mover will integrate into the airport’s infrastructure and ensure smooth and seamless passenger flow and reduce walking distances for passengers.
Sadik said that the people mover would connect all the three terminals at the airport and the new cargo city would be completed within two years. In addition, there are also plans to build a multi-storey car park, which once completed, will house 3,000 cars, he said.
