The Reunion-based operator has signed up for two of the superjumbos and plans to operate them between the Indian Ocean island state and Paris. Air Austral opted for the A380 after surveying passengers who said they wanted cheaper air travel.

“We are convinced that the future of air transport is for lower fares and the low-cost transportation of passengers,” said Gerard Etheve, president of the airline. “The answer to the passenger demand for lower fares is to have lower costs.

“After studying the problem with the commercial and technical people from Airbus, we concluded that the A380 was the answer.”

He added: “We are very proud to be the first to start a high-density A380 and we are convinced we will not be the last.”

John Leahy, Airbus chief operating officer – customers said that not only would the airline benefit from lower operating costs, but that passengers would enjoy “the most comfortable high-density operation available anywhere. This will be the biggest and most comfortable economy seat anywhere.”

He added: “Air Austral opens a new chapter for A380 operations. It will operate the A380 with the lowest fuel cost and emissions per passenger of any aircraft available today.

“The in-service experience has shown just has efficient the A380 really is, and this order from Air Austral demonstrates new ways of benefiting from that efficiency.”
