Air Algérie orders 16 ATR 72-600 aircraft plus full-flight simulator http://www.timesaerospace.aero/news/air-transport/air-algerie-orders-16-atr-72-600-aircraft-plus-full-flight-simulator

Air Algérie, ATR’s largest customer in Africa, has been operating ATR aircraft since 2003, with previous acquisitions in 2008 and 2014 and currently operates 12 ATR 72-500s and 3 ATR 72-600s. As the airline gradually commits to reducing its carbon footprint, this new order highlights Air Algérie’s continued confidence in ATR’s efficient aircraft and proven technology.

Deliveries of the new aircraft are scheduled between 2026 and 2028. Equipped with latest generation PW127XT engines, the 72-seats ATR 72-600s will be operated by a newly created regional subsidiary of Air Algérie – Domestic Airlines. It will be focused on enhancing connectivity across the nation, especially in the southern regions of the country – areas where air travel is essential for economic and social growth. This further sets ATR as the leader of regional connections and a powerful asset to bring people, businesses, and communities together.

Hamza Benhamouda, chief executive officer of Air Algérie, commented: “The ATR 72-600 is the right aircraft to help us connect all regions of our country and support national development through reliable and efficient air transport. Its performance on short and thin routes makes it an essential part of our strategy while its fuel efficiency also supports our goal of reducing emissions and building more sustainable operations. By investing in this new fleet and the first ATR 72-600 simulator in Africa, we are also reinforcing our commitment to regional connectivity, operational excellence, and the future of regional aviation in Algeria.”

Nathalie Tarnaud Laude, chief executive officer of ATR, added: “This order is a powerful endorsement of the ATR 72-600’s capabilities and the value it brings to foster regional connectivity. With its exceptionally low operating costs, fuel efficiency, and ability to perform reliably in diverse and demanding environments like the Algerian climate, the ATR 72-600 is uniquely suited for low-density routes and remote regions. These advantages are precisely why Air Algérie continues to place its trust in ATR after more than 20 years of partnership – our aircraft consistently delivers the performance and adaptability needed to connect communities and support sustainable regional growth.”

In addition to the aircraft, the acquisition of the ATR 72-600 simulator – to be installed in Air Algérie’s existing training centre – will enhance pilot training capabilities and support the airline’s high standards in operational safety and maintenance excellence.

The upcoming roadshows will take place at the following locations and times:

Edinburgh at DoubleTree by Hilton

19th July at 10am and 1pm

20th July at 10am

Birmingham at Radisson Blu Hotel:

22nd July at 10am and 1pm

Experienced pilots who are keen to join Emirates as First Officers Type Rated/Non-Type Rated, Direct Entry Captains, or via the Accelerated Command Programme are welcome. Last year, Emirates announced significant and exciting changes to its pilot recruitment, including higher salaries, new roles, and a radical change to eligibility.

Experienced pilots will join Emirates for roles in one of the four programmes: Direct Entry Captains, Accelerated Command, First Officers Type Rated and First Officers Non-Type Rated.

Prior registration is not required, and pilots are only required to attend one of the sessions. At the session, prospective Emirates pilots can find out more about the airline’s recruitment process, available opportunities, training programmes, expected career trajectory, and benefits, as well as speak to pilots currently flying with Emirates.

Jabr Al- Azeeby, Emirates Divisional Vice President in the UK, said: “Emirates pilots fly one of the world’s youngest and most modern all wide-body fleet to over 148 destinations across the globe. They will have the opportunity to undergo robust in-house training at Emirates’ cutting-edge training facility and will also be based in the vibrant city of Dubai. We look forward to having more pilots from the UK onboard our airline, as we ramp up our operations globally.”

Emirates’ new pilot training facility is spread across 63,318 sq. ft. and worth an investment of US$135 million. The facility accommodates six Full Flight Simulator Bays for its A350 and 777X aircraft and will be opening very soon.

Direct Entry Captain

To command Emirates’ highly anticipated A350 fleet of 65 aircraft or A380s. Candidates need a minimum of 7,000 hours of flying experience on multi-crew, multi-engine commercial aircraft.

Accelerated Command Programme

Primarily designed for experienced Airbus and Boeing Captains, who currently command narrow-body aircraft on regional routes and wish to dial up their careers by working with a global airline brand.

Captains with a minimum of 1,000 hours of Airbus fly-by-wire and Boeing experience will join Emirates as First Officers on an enhanced salary package. They are eligible for an accelerated command upgrade after a minimum of 700 flying hours and two successful recurrent checks. Typically, Emirates pilots achieve these milestones in a little over a year as they fly a mix of ultra-long, long- and short-haul routes.

First Officers – non-type rated

Emirates is welcoming First Officers who are non-type rated – which essentially means those who have experience only on turbo prop or jets. These pilots will now have the opportunity to be fully trained to fly the airline’s all wide-body fleet of 144 Boeing aircraft across its network that spans more than 140 destinations. First Officers will also be able to fly 205 of the new Boeing 777-Xs when these aircraft enter the fleet from 2025.

First Officer

Candidates for First Officer roles must have multi-engine, multi-crew aircraft experience, a valid International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Airline Transport Pilot License (ATPL), and a minimum of 2,000 hours on 20-tonne maximum take-off weight aircraft.

Why it's time to get tough on the pilot poachers http://www.timesaerospace.aero/features/training/why-its-time-to-get-tough-on-the-pilot-poachers

Why it's time to get tough on the pilot poachers

Ibrahim Mshelia

Ibrahim Mshelia, chief executive officer of Mish Aviation Flying School in Accra, Ghana, has advised that to resolve the challenges associated with poaching of aviation professionals in Africa and bond contract conflicts involving airline pilots, “the legal framework should sort this out”.

“Any pilot who takes a contract and violates it should have his or her license suspended after thorough investigation,” Mshelia said.

He said that Nigeria’s aviation minister’s recent signing of the practice direction for domesticated Cape Town convention with legal framework completely executed, “has given aircraft lessors more confidence and comfort to deal with Nigerian carriers.

“A similar framework would help to put parties under check. I must add that it is not only the trainee who receives training on bond that usually defaults. The sponsors are also guilty at times and make the candidate find it convenient to leave. So, it is a two-sided affair even though the candidates’ cases are more prevalent. A legal frame work is necessary and this would fix the problem!” he said.

Mshelia added: “The poaching issues have discouraged operators from sponsoring training, but this should be addressed legally such that any candidate jumping a sponsorship contract or an operator acting similarly shall have heavy sanctions as a deterrent.

“This will encourage reintroduction of sponsorship by the airlines and others, thereby reducing the problems drastically. The current trend by both operators and pilots who have abused such agreements have become like a plague in trust between the two.

“The brain drain is not only affecting aviation. As a matter of fact, aviation may be the least affected, in that only the experienced pilots are able to get jobs in those climes.

“The effect is huge on our system locally because the young graduates cannot readily take up certain positions. With the drain, our airspace will end up with replacement of experienced pilots from foreign countries who will now take charge of our local operators’ needs. Usually too, that is more expensive. This is a very bad trend that is going to stagnate, if not stall employment and professional growth of our young processionals.

“This will also eventually cause the unemployed young professionals to seek employment elsewhere where possible or completely disappear from the industry that they once loved or planned for; where they spent some time, resources and energy to acquire their desired skills. Aviation is not a sector that can be ignored at all by any economy.

“We must therefore frown at the trend and I encourage governments across the region to begin to see civil pilot training as a developmental policy, similar to how they train military fighter pilots in preparation for eventualities or conflict.

“For example, during my days at a flying school in Nigeria, 98 per cent of my course mates, including myself, were all sponsored either by airlines, oil services companies, state and federal governments, and so on. Only one or two were privately sponsored. This was a government policy then.

“While the government itself sponsored candidates on merit, they also made it a condition for specific companies involved in high net-worth investments and oil exploration to sponsor candidates for the industry as a development levy.

“This should be encouraged by all regional governments and taken very seriously as a policy for developing the sector. Incentives should also be provided to operators and sponsors to ensure that the policy is sustained.

“There is a particular need to deliberately encourage local operators with incentives to sponsor and employ from the local market and exhaust it before experts are given opportunities. We cannot allow an important sector of our economy such as aviation to be dominated by expatriates. Our nations should look deeply into a legal framework, which will benefit both sponsors and candidates,” said Mshelia.

He said that apart from pilots, Mish aviation would within the next five years, “commence training of aircraft maintenance engineers, flight dispatchers and also, commence air charter services and schedule passenger services in some parts of the region.”

Emirates Flight Training Academy expands with two Gamebird GB1 aircraft http://www.timesaerospace.aero/news/training/emirates-flight-training-academy-expands-with-two-gamebird-gb1-aircraft

With 30 Cirrus, Phenom and Diamond aircraft in its fleet, EFTA is now training cadets on four distinct aircraft types – a rarity in aviation training – before they graduate from the academy.

The new Gamebirds are the academy’s first aerobatic aircraft specially designed for upset prevention and recovery training (UPRT). They provide exceptional control and responsiveness, meeting the rigorous demands of cadet training and high performance flying.

Cadet pilots can now confidently complete five hours of UPRT and manage training scenarios with versatility and the aircraft’s cutting-edge technology.

Captain Abdulla Al Hammadi, divisional vice president, EFTA said: “We have remained steadfast and true to our vision – to be at the forefront of aviation training as it’s pivotal in shaping Emirates’ and the industry’s future. We’ve adopted a game-changing approach with our training: equip our cadets with the latest tools and technology, recalibrate regularly to prepare for future challenges, and ensure there are zero gaps. We are committed to ensuring our cadets are fully prepared and can contribute in their aviation careers from day one. The Gamebird has elevated our curriculum and will ensure our graduates are equipped with the skills and confidence to excel.”

Engineered to maximise operational efficiency, the Gamebird offers endurance of up to seven hours and 30 minutes, with 1.5 hours aerobatic manoeuvring and high performance capabilities.

Flydubai launches Ab Initio Pilot Training programme http://www.timesaerospace.aero/news/training/flydubai-launches-ab-initio-pilot-training-programme

This initiative comes as part of the airline’s workforce strategy to meet the growing demands of its expanding fleet and network over the next decade.

The airline operates a young and efficient fleet of Boeing 737 aircraft serving an expanding network of more than 130 destinations. With more than 125 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft and 30 Boeing 787s on order, this is a unique opportunity for aspiring pilots to join a Multi-Pilot License (MPL) programme, develop essential flying skills and launch a rewarding aviation career with Flydubai.

Ghaith Al Ghaith, chief executive officer at Flydubai, said: “Dubai has emerged as one of the global aviation hubs by not only connecting the world, but also attracting skilled talent who choose to make the city their home. We are proud to have played a key role in supporting Dubai’s aviation and economic vision and we will continue to invest in initiatives that grow our skilled workforce, who contribute to the success of this industry. This programme opens the door to homegrown Emirati talent, as well as residents and international applicants, who are passionate about aviation, to pursue a career in one of the most thriving hubs in the world.”

The Flydubai Ab Initio Pilot Training programme provides all the necessary training required to enable young people over 17 years old, who have graduated from high school, to become commercial airline pilots. Cadets who successfully complete their initial training will qualify at the Flydubai Flight Training centre to become Boeing 737 pilots.

Captain Ahmad Bin Huzaim, senior vice president of flight operations at Flydubai, said: “The flydubai Ab Initio programme is designed to identify and train passionate individuals, with little to no prior flying experience, and prepare them to operate as second officers on our growing fleet of Boeing 737 aircraft. The rigorous programme is a structured journey that takes cadets from foundational theory to commercial flight readiness in approximately 18 to 24 months.”

“While academic excellence forms the foundation of this programme, we equally value leadership, teamwork and decisiveness – core attributes of any successful pilot. The launch of the new Ab Initio programme opens the doors to numerous opportunities to grow our talent pool and we look forward to developing the programme in the future to cover more roles in the aviation industry, including maintenance and engineering, air traffic controllers and much more,” added Bin Huzaim.

The programme includes ground school training, simulator and flight instruction, line training and final integration into flydubai’s flight operations.

Candidates are required to meet a number of eligibility requirements and will undergo rigorous screening tests online and on-site, including a series of aptitude, cognitive and psychomotor assessments during the initial screening phase as well as medical clearances. The first batch of cadets is expected to begin training in the last quarter of 2025.
