Edremit is the gateway to Turkey's northern Aegean region and is known as the olive-growing capital of Turkey. The region is famous for its Kaz Dagi national park and the surrounding pretty villages, which are popular with tourists during the summer months.

Erzurum is popular for its skiing at the Palandoken Winter Sports Centre, which has some of the longest and steepest ski pistes in the world and can accommodate up to 32,000 people per day on a combination of runs. In April, the resort features the popular Palandoken Ski Cup.

Mardin with its Arab-style sandstone houses clinging vertiginously to the hillsides is often referred to as an open-air museum. With a glorious Assyrian heritage to discover there are many churches and monasteries worth seeing, including the famous Deyr'ul Zafaran Monastery as well as exciting projects interweaving past and present, including the Sakip Sabanci Museum.

The region also has a thriving local cuisine with delicacies including stuffed ribs and a sweet 'sausage' made of walnuts and dried fruit on offer in the local markets.
