The Saudi Binladin Group has begun work on the major Saudi gateway project.

Binladin was awarded the $7.2 billion main contract last November and has been set a three-year timeframe for completion

The first phase of the project, worth $4 billion, involves   construction of a 670,000 sq.m   passenger terminal   complex with 94 aircraft bays.

The second phase, valued at $3.2 billion, includes the building of a 133m   high airport control tower – which will make it the world’s tallest control tower -   an 8,200-capacity car park, three power generation and cooling centres, data administration centres, infrastructure and road networks.

In December the Saudi civil aviation authority told Arabian aerospace that the aim of the project is to more than double the existing passenger handling capacity, from 17 million passengers per year, to 35 million passengers per year.
