When finalised, the agreement will be worth $4.7 billion at list prices and includes options for five additional 777-300ERs.

Boeing is delighted that Turkish Airlines has selected the 777 and in due course is looking to finalise this order - at which time the airplanes will be posted to the Boeing Orders & Deliveries website as a firm order.

Analyst Saj Ahmad commented: "Turkish Airlines is rapidly expanding both its network and capacity to meet demand. It has quickly become a very Emirates-like growing airline and with the recent announcement for A330s, the carrier is looking forward to expanding its reach to more US and Asian services that the 777-300ERs will be deployed on.

“At the same time, it probably spells the end of its interest in the 747-8 Intercontinental as well. While there is still an opportunity that it could place an order next year as the carrier had previously indicated, the size of the 777-300ER order would effectively negate the need for a standalone fleet of any 747 or even A380.”

Ahmad added: “Turkish Airlines is driven by frequency and is not compelled to buy 747-8 Intercontinentals or A380s when Istanbul has various gate and ramp space issues - none of which affect the 777-300ER. As the 777-300ER seems a perfect fit for Emirates, so too is it for Turkish Airlines."
